Too Much Tahong Filled Negros

I came from the province of Negros Occidental and in our place, I have a story to share. We live near the sea, and because of this we are rich in its natural resources. Besides being a fisherman, there are also people who are looking for a living as fish brokers, and fish vendors.

Of course, the natural resources of the sea do not revolve around older men only. Whole families from little boys, girls, moms, and elderly people can also find source of income as sea can provide. One of these stances is when the waves are strong enough due to bad weather or storms. Because of the surges, seafoods just like mussels are washed ashore.

The abundant mussels are more visible to the locals and much accessible, when the water level drops during low tide. Of course, these tahong are too much for the residents. In order not to be wasted, rotten and later may produce foul odor as not being consumed, it is distributed to others who are interested in this marine resource. With the help of social media such as Facebook, the people of San Enrique have invited residents in nearby areas to help them harvest the abundant mussels that are almost tons of quantity. And because many saw such uploaded photos and videos on the internet, many also went to join the catch.
  • Fresh mussels can be peeled and cooked in a adobo style.
  • It can be cooked in simple soup with lemongrass.
  • Or sauté the tomato with onion and ginger and then add a little broth.
  • It can also be cooked with sotanghon or noodles (miswa).
Mussels that are brownish in color are tastier than the green shells we buy in the market.
